One City, One Book

Caitlin Lusk sat toward the back of the library listening to him speak. With her she carried a piece of her own writing, to show him or one of his publishers and ask for their opinion.

As an aspiring writer, she wanted to have Tim Madigan, the visiting author for Mansfield Reads “One City One Book” program give her advice on how to have her own work published and how to become a better writer.

“I got an insight on how he was moved from different people and how they affected his writing,” sophomore Caitlin Lusk said.

Caitlin plans to attend his free writer’s workshop tomorrow from 10:00 to 12:00 p.m. at The Mansfield Public Library, and gather more insight into what it takes to become a stronger writer.

Every year during April, Mansfield chooses an author to travel to all four high schools and give a work shop for students, including Buzz Bissinger author of Friday Night Lights who attended last year.

“[The Mansfield Public Library] tries to find a book that would be interesting to a lot of different people,” Librarian Pam Pinkerton said.

Pinkerton believes he had a positive influence on everyone who listened to him during the speech, and thought the students responded well and had lots of good questions.

“Even though the book was written by an adult about adult relationships, the kids could relate to some of the things that happened in his life because some of them happened in their lives already,” Mrs. Pinkerton said.

Lusk says she feels a common relationship between her and Tim Madigan because she was also influence by one person to begin writing.

“It’s interesting how you can find one source or one person to be the reason for this wonderful book,” Lusk said.
