24 Indisputably Great Teen Movies

Ryland Mallett and Micaih Thomas, write about the best teen movies.
Ryland Mallett and Micaih Thomas, write about the best teen movies.

If you’re going to read this list, turn your T.V. on or open your Netflix app. In fact, get a snack. Put that homework that you were about to do back in your binder. I’m not telling you to procrastinate, I’m just telling you to get your priorities straight. This list is your priority. School can wait. You’re about to witness the world’s greatest movie list.

School Movies

Clueless
Cher Horowitz, normal girl who lives in a mansion, hangs with the coolest of the cool, attends Beverly Hills high school, shops every weekend with her dad’s credit card, and buys expensive clothes that none of her friends could ever afford. All her life, she’s helped others with their personal problems, but when it comes to her own love life, she’s clueless.  Life seems to emulate itself throughout the ages, but Clueless has become a perfect example of teen culture and every adolescent’s desire to fit in. This movie has inspired many trends, fads and phases that we still use to this day. “As if!”

Mean Girls
Dear Tina Fey (the woman who wrote and directed Mean Girls): I just want to say thank you. Thank you for writing this movie, thank you for understanding teen culture and thank you for breathing on my 2004 childhood. If you haven’t seen this movie I am sorry to say that I disown you. I understand that’s kind of unfair considering that I don’t know any of you, but you can’t make any excuses for not seeing this legendary movie.

Princess Diaries
Mia Thermopolis, your average misunderstood teenage girl who spends her time working, dreaming about boys and ranting to her cat, Fat Louie. Suddenly, she gets a surprise visit from her grandma who hasn’t reached out to her in years. Her life turns upside down when she finds out that the Genovian throne belongs to her.  Shoutout to my sister, Mikaylan, who was obsessed with this movie and forced me to watch it after she watched reruns of Degrassi.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower
If you’re awkward and like to take delight in depressing things,(like every Legacy student) you should take this movie into consideration. The story takes place in a stereotypical high school, where sex and parties rest on the minds of each student. Charlie, the main character, befriends two odd balls who teach him the ways of the world, while trying to find community in the midst of loneliness. Everyone feels lonely; this movie shows us that we don’t have to let that emotion rule our lives.

Freaky Friday
This movie encompasses every angsty teenage fantasy you could think of. Anna, played by Lindsay Lohan, a rebellious teen who lives to make her mother’s life miserable. Suddenly, Anna magically switches bodies with her mom and learns the meaning of love, forgiveness, and family.

She’s the Man
Viola, played by Amanda Bynes, a soccer player that aspires to be the best of the best. But her school, coaches and even her boyfriend tell her otherwise because she’s a girl. As a way to prove them wrong, she takes her brother’s place at his boarding school so he can go off and become an artist. She’s undercover and learning to be one of the guys while mastering her soccer skills. Instructions for how to watch this movie: should be played late at night with your siblings, friends, or cousins with popcorn and candy in hand.

The Craft
Three wannabe witches who attend Catholic prep high school, befriend Sarah Bailey, new student who actually possesses real powers. The movie takes you on a rustic journey with these four enchantresses as they battle their own internal issues and demons that come back to haunt them. Please, do yourself a favor and watch this thrilling movie. Do it for the aesthetic. Warning: don’t watch if you’re by yourself unless you enjoy being creeped out.

High School Musical
“We’re sooooarrin’, flyyinnn’, there’s not a star in heaven that weee can’t reeeaach.” If this movie didn’t inspire you to want to play basketball, join theater, or date a girl who looks exactly like Gabriella, what were you doing?

Camp Rock
Describing this movie with the word “passion” would be an understatement. Somewhere deep inside my heart rests a white boy with one bang covering his eye, skinny jeans too tight for his skinny legs and earbuds in his ear blasting The All-American Rejects. He likes to be known as my 2008 spirit guide. He rules my heart.

Twitches
“Go twitches, Go twitches!” Just when you thought Tia and Tamera, known for their iconic show, Sister,Sister, couldn’t get any better, they appear on this awesome movie. You’re probably sitting in your room, on your iPad or computer procrastinating on homework thinking, “What’s a twitch?” Glad you asked. Twin + Twin + Magical abilities + family filled with witches and sorcerers= Twitch.

Parent Trap (1961)
I don’t know a single person who has never wanted to have a twin, so when Sharon McKendrick and Susan Evers happen across each other at a summer camp they showed people a dream come true. Hayley Mills beautifully portrayed two characters with quite opposite personalities and shows their transition from enemies to sisters.

Just My Luck
Ashley, played by Lindsay Lohan, is a successful woman who has always had good luck. After a strange encounter with a very unlucky man, their fates get switched and she struggles to adjust to her misfortune. If you like romantic movies this one might be for you. Just My Luck can be compared to a well thought out recipe. Splash of comedy, teaspoon full of romance, and a pinch of romance.

Grease
Basically the same storyline of High School Musical, the movie follows two teenagers who fall in love in the summer. However, they claim two different cliques. Together, they learn what’s more important to them: their love or being themselves.

Lemonade Mouth
Five unlikely high school students meet by fate in detention and instantaneously bond over their love for music. The movie takes you on individual journeys with the members of the band. Throughout the movie, you witness their individual struggles, insecurities and rise to fame.  Why the name Lemonade mouth? You’ll have to watch to find out.

Comedies

Monty Python’s Search For The Holy Grail
Probably one the dumbest movies to exist, you can’t help but crack up at the continuous stream of one-liners and the impossible scenarios that fill every minute. Confusion, disarray and shock consumes all who watch this show but you can’t help but to quote it for years afterward.

Pitch Perfect
A perfect show of friendship in the midst of chaos, Pitch Perfect redefined acappella music as we know it. A group of college students express themselves through music while trying to beat a rivaling team for the all-time prize. In my opinion, one of the funniest characters, Fat Amy, played by Rebel Wilson, brought a unique type of humor to the table that could make anyone go back to college and join a group of students in a singing journey across the nation.

Jumanji
Jumanji was one of my all time favorites because of the out-of-this-world terrors filling a few kids’ every day life. From animals running a muck to roaring floods to a crazy jungle man, nothing in this movie leaves you feeling like anything is normal.

Dazed and Confused
Students in Austin, Texas celebrate the last day of school and the beginning of the summer of 76. 70’s life depicts itself through the eyes of ordinary teens. For them, fun can be found in the local arcade, parties that turn into full swing at night and deep talks with their friends as they try to imagine their lives outside of high school.

Action

Guardians of the Galaxy
Changing Heros from buff dudes with tights and cheesy motos to deranged, gun-fighting raccoons with adorable tree friends, this movie redefined how people picture super heroes today. If you don’t laugh during the entire 2 hours and 2 minutes you must be the driest person alive because each character brings a new, unique kind of humor to this show. If the humor doesn’t do it for you then the complex connections between drama, romance and action sure will. I would recommend Guardians for the Galaxy to any hero loving, movie buff out there.

The Hunger Games
America and everything that we know as the world has passed away. The Hunger Games takes place in a futuristic dystopia organized by 12 districts that are being punished for some unknown wrongdoing long in the past. If you’re looking for action, romance, drama, and a lot of deception, The Hunger Games should be first on your list of movies to watch.

Interstellar
Christopher Nolan, the director of Interstellar, beautifully created a tense atmosphere and connected the audience to the characters from beginning to end. If nobody spoils the ending for you, it will leave you in shock throughout a universe of time. Watching this movie will leave you constantly on the look out for the fifth dimension.

The Maze Runner
Buying the whole series of Maze Runner movies within the first ten minutes of watching the first one is common amongst science fiction loving nerds. The constant mystery and action creates a large cloud of suspense sent to attract the attention of passing viewers. I would recommend this to anyone who looks for an action packed depiction of a condensed human society.

Back to the Future
Time. The final frontier. These are the voyages of the… wait wrong show. There is no other time movie more classic than Back to the Future. You can’t watch this movie and not want to ask santa for a brand new hover board or a pair of Marty Mcfly’s self lacing shoes. Never watching this all time movie is not an option.

Zathura
From playing a boardgame to finding themselves lost in space to running from giant lizards, this pair of brothers inspired kids all over. Kids like my younger self only dreamed of the adventures Walter and Danny Budwing enjoyed. Plus, Their common arguments and quarrels were all too relatable.
