Junior Katy Thomas rehearses for the theater department’s one act play, “Silent Sky.” Thomas will play the lead part of Henrietta Leavitt, a female astronomer at the turn of the century. The play, which details Leavitt’s struggles as a woman of science during that time, is open to the public on March 5, and will be performed in competition on March 9.

The theater department will perform their annual one act play, Silent Sky, on Monday, March 5.  The performance begins at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., with free admission. Junior Katy Thomas plays Henrietta Leavitt, the lead in the show.

“You should come see the show because it’s free and you will be moved by the story of Henrietta Leavitt,” Thomas said. “The show might just inspire you to do something awesome.”

Silent Sky tells the story of Henrietta Leavitt, a female astronomer in 1908. Henrietta struggles because she doesn’t get credited with her discoveries. She also faces the obstacle of being a woman in her time period.

“My favorite part is bonding with my cast and telling a story as a team,” Thomas said. “I love the show, it is beautifully written. My favorite thing about my character is that she persists. She refuses to give up even when things get unimaginably difficult.”

The cast and crew will put on the public performance in preparation for their district UIL competition on Thursday.

Star Wars is the best movie because the mix of science that encaptures the audience into a child-like state of wonder alongside fiction that tells the tale of an adventure that is able to romantically describe the problems of life into the idealism that good and evil can be simplified into two sides.
