Eight teachers won a grant for almost $5,000 to purchase 18 iPod Touches. The first of its kind in MISD, the lab can be checked out through the library for any class.
As a means of keeping up with the technology of today, the grant purchased the iTouches, protective cases, and $300 worth of gift cards to purchase applications in the iTunes store.
Taking a page from the technology plan of the distrct which states, “We can no longer teach today’s students with yesterday’s tools and expect them to succeed in tomorrow’s world,” the grant provides students with new ways to interact with class material.
The Communication Applications class will record and review podcasts of their own speeches, Cockrell’s history class will research a project on their heritage, ESL students will use applications to better English reading and speaking skills, and the Journalism program will test run future projects for the iTouch.
“The iPod touchs will also be great for our online newspaper,” journalism adviser Leland Mallett said. “Students can access our pod casts and paper online from the iPod.”
Equipment is now in the purchasing process and the lab will launch in May.
