New Texas Law Bans Cell Phones in Cars for Teens

The Texas Department of Public Safety passed a law taking effect tomorrow (September 1), prohibiting teenagers 17 and under from driving while operating a wireless communication device in a school zone.

“I think it’s a great law. More and more kids are having accidents due to cell phones,” Drivers Education teacher Mr. Williams said. “Unless it’s completely hand free, I’m 100% for this law.”

According to Mr. Williams, an increase in accidents caused by cell phones is derived from text messaging.

“When texting, you don’t just take your eyes off the road for a few seconds. It’s obvious that it’s a distraction,” Mr. Williams said.

Another law the DPS passed that takes effect tomorrow requires seatbelts to be worn by all occupants of a vehicle despite age or where they sit in the automobile. Brady Burke, who recently completed the Drivers Education course, says these new laws will ensure his safety on the road.

“People can go flying through the windshield in an accident without their seatbelt. I don’t always like it, but it’s the law and it can save your life,” Burke said.

I think this law is necessary not only for the driver who should heed everything he has learned in his driving manuel about driving with both hands on the wheel , but also for the rest of the drivers who might just cross the path of the negligent teenager texting his friends and be the victim of an unnecessary fender bender or worse a deadly accident.

The phone thing makes sense. It’s a law to protect other people from “driver’s-on-phones.” But I can’t see much justification in the seat belt thing other than to write tickets. Whether or not you have to wear a seat belt should be up to the driver. If a person doesn’t mind the risk, and the driver could care less, then why make a law that forces one to preserve his life. It isn’t illegal to drive a motorcycle with no helmet, or smoke/drink yourself to death, or to eat unhealthy until you have a heart attack.
