Back to the B.A.S.I.C.s

B.A.S.I.C. is an on-campus-Christian program that’s open to anyone. According to members, they take church and try to make it entertaining and comfortable so people will want to be one with God. A group of seven girls from Walnut Ridge Baptist Church started the club.

“B.A.S.I.C is about reaching out to the students,” senior Katie Hogaboom said.

The club members say that B.A.S.I.C does not tolerate hypocrisy and doesn’t judge anyone.

“I want to see God working in the whole student body. We welcome everyone,” junior Cayce Elder said.

After being asked by Nikki Childs, Mrs. Schimming agreed to be the sponsor of the organization. Even though Schimming sponsors and contributes to so many activities, it was an offer she couldn’t give up, she says.

“I think that’s the only time I have looked at the kids and it was a cause so good that I couldn’t say no,” Mrs. Schimming said.

B.A.S.I.C is held every Wednesday morning in Mrs. Schimming’s room between 6:30 and 7:00. The group starts with an opening prayer, then singing, a message, another prayer, updates and a closing prayer.  Every week a different student reads from the Bible and talks about issues that teenagers go through.

“A lot of the kids who are involved have changed for the better,” Elder said, “God drifted me away from parties and showed me that you don’t have to party to fit in with everyone else.”

In the first meeting 34 kids attended. On the second there were 68.

“I was happy to see kids there that you wouldn’t even expect to have a relationship with God,” Hogaboom said.

I think that it’s a wonderful thing to see God working in the lives of students who go to Legacy because then they can reach out to other students from other schools and it just makes our school seem nicer and more considerate. I am sorry to say that I haven’t been to any of the meetings but I’m thinking that I want to start to go. Good job Legacy, good job B.A.S.I.C, and good job Mrs.Schimming.
