Amongst the slippery boards and shiny pins, Legacy’s bowling team works tirelessly to perfect their techniques in a community where all are welcomed and safe. Volunteer coaches Sheila Burger and Mike Young, work with team members to learn basic bowling and competition skills.

“Overall we’re very proud of our members,” Coach Sheila Burger said. “They’ve all made incredible progress and are performing amazingly.” 

After several practice matches, the team will compete at the district match Feb. 22. If the team succeeds at the match, they will advance and compete at the regional match in Ft. Worth on March 5.

“The team is very dedicated and are becoming more disciplined as time goes on. As their coach, it makes me so proud,” Coach Mike Young said.

Both the male and female team practice vigorously throughout the week. All teams meet at Forum Bowl in Grand Prairie from 4:30 to 5:30 p. m. Boys meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and girls meet on Mondays and Thursdays. The only time practice isn’t held is when a match is being held at the International Training and Research Center in Arlington, where many of the bowling matches occur.

The team has five returning members to the girls team alongside four new members. In addition, the male team has gained extra members allowing for a new co-ed JV team this year.

“I would recommend this club to anyone who wants to learn how to bowl. From the athletes to the beginners there are spots for everyone. There is also an opportunity for scholarships,” Coach Young said. 

With practice high and varying experience from member to member, encouragement and kindness is a value held by everyone involved. Junior Raylee Mallett joined the bowling team this year. Students can join the team with no prior experience. The coaches work with members at varying levels of experience, from beginner to advanced.

“Personally I really love our community, despite feeling a little intimidating at first due to my inexperience,” Mallett said. “Everyone is so kind and supportive, it really uplifts you and makes you feel so safe and calm. I’ve only been in bowling for two months now, but I can confidently say that it was a great decision and I really encourage anyone to join. It’s such a pleasure to be here.”

Members of the team excelled throughout the season, with several first-year members improving their scores by 20+ pins by the end of the season.

“I’m extremely proud to be a bowling coach and even prouder of the kids I’ve been coaching. They have undoubtedly excelled within this club and I’m happy to see that they find such cheer in our bowling community,” Coach Burger said.
