How to Adult: Car Maintenance
No matter if the vehicle is new or old, they all need regular and well done maintenance in order to function to the best of its abilities, but many don’t know when or how maintenance is conducted.
Oil Change
Most manufactures and mechanics used to say your recommended oil change should be scheduled around every 3,000 miles, but presently, they recommend every 7,500-10,000 miles. When getting your oil changed, it is highly recommended to have it done by a professional. Keeping track of the mileage is very important, write notes in your phone or a notebook to keep track.
Brakes
When driving a long distance, watch out for signs of when your brakes might need an inspection like high-pitched noises when braking, steering wheel vibration when stopping, metal grinding sounds, a reduce in time of stopping, pulling to one side when braking or stopping or a foul smell when applying the brakes. If any of the above are apparent, have your brakes checked to assure your safety on the road.
Tires
Keeping your tires in good maintenance helps safety and reduces the amount of money spent on spares. Pressure consists of the air compression in the tire, under-inflated tires can poorly affect fuel efficiency and increase risk of damage or blow out. Tread keeps your car on the road. With poor tread, the risk of slipping on rain or ice increases. Fully rotating tires is more efficient than anything less, it improves the efficiency of the driving and prevents wear and tear of the tires. Balance on all four tires will help them all last longer, increasing their longevity. It’s important to pay attention to those details for affective wheels and tires.
Air Filter
The air filter needs inspection during each oil change, and if you live or drive somewhere with a lot of pollen and mountain cedar, have the air filter checked regularly.
Hoses and Belts
The hoses and belts of the car can wear out easily from harsh and drastic weather, or when they are under heavy mileage. It’s important to check for cracks and tears by looking under the hood and checking.
Wiper Blades
A car’s wiper blades should be replaced in the spring and winter, or if you drive through regular drastic weather such as rain and storms. Cracked or chipped blades are less effective and can restrict your view on the road.
