Legacy’s football team is good, there’s no doubt about that. However, offense could use some more help. The varsity only averages 15.66 points a game, including defensive scores. There’s no problem with skill set. We have the talent to score more points. Where we’re lacking is in the running game.
I’m not saying Cameron Davis is a bad running back. I’m saying he could be given more opportunity. Give the guy more carries. He can make plays. Second, instead of executing all of our running plays in the shotgun we should run more in the standard formation. Running plays in the shotgun takes more time in the handoff and has more of a chance of a negative play. The quarterback has to take the snap, get it under control, and then hand it off to the back. This gives the defense more time to read the play and sets them up to make a stop. If we ran in the standard, we could get more success. It would give Davis a head start that way he can hit the hole with more force and can be more decisive in his cuts.
Legacy should still run the options they had a lot of success with. But on the runs where it’s going straight to Davis without a read after the snap, it should be in the standard formation. In addition to the running game, when Legacy needs to take a knee, it should also be in the standard formation. When it’s out in the shotgun, there’s a chance that there can be a high snap, which could result in an unwanted change in possession or even worse, a score by the opposition.
Seeing the talent our offense has, it’s easy to see we could score a lot of points. Running out of the standard formation could spark an already threatening running game. A successful running game could take a lot of pressure off of QB Kennedy Jones, and set up the play-action even better to hit our receivers deep. It could be a true benefit.
