Yesterday Steve Jobs and his handy Keynote presentation made waves in the tech world with the all new iPad. If by some chance the iPad takes off then I will be thoroughly surprised. Only time will tell what the market demands.
Initially seeing the all new iPad I thought there is no way that this is real; it looks like a giant iPhone. I don’t know if this will be as huge of a success as the other products in Apple’s lineup. I was expecting a brand new interface or an operating system based off OS X, because then the tablet would be able to perform more advanced tasks than the iPhone.
As of now it is based on the iPhone OS which is a solid operating system, but it lacks the power required to make it a viable product. Some of the core applications have been redesigned to take full advantage of the 9.6 inch multi-touch screen. The Mail app now looks similar to what it would like on a desktop computer. It boasts almost all of the same features as the iPhone, like its 3G capabilities with the data plan offered through AT&T. It also boasts a ten hour battery life and a month of standby because the architecture of the 1 GHz A4 chip developed by P.A. Semi. Its form factor is quite impressive with it being .5 in thick and weighing only 1.5 pounds.
The iPad’s major weakness is that there is still no multi tasking, limiting the entire functionality of the device. Until Apple updates their iPhone OS to include this, I don’t see it taking hold in a wide spread market. Another front is Apple still refuses to include Flash. If these two updates are included in a future revision of the OS, then the iPad might have a future in the homes of people across the world.
Even though I’m a little skeptical of the success the device will be able to achieve, I know the second that they begin showing up in stores I’ll be heading over to the Apple Store to mess with one. As of now, Apple plans to release the non 3G version within the next 60 days and then the 3G version about a month after that. I’ll be on the look out for the new Apple iPad.
