You know when Jesus Christ was resurrected three days after he died on the cross, to his apostles in the eastern hemisphere? Well he also appeared to those who lived in the western hemisphere. And we have the record of not only that, but the history of their people before and after. That record is called the Book of Mormon, it’s an additional scriptural book, much like the Bible.
Enough about history. I attend an early morning scripture study called seminary before every day of school. It’s from 5:45-6:30. Yes in the morning. It’s early, but the sacrifice of sleep is worth it. Knowledge gained from certain things, such as seminary, cannot be replaced.
We also have a whole set of high standards that most people stop at to stare, like drinking no alcohol at all, ever. We don’t date until we are 16, and even then we will most likely date another Mormon, and in group dating situations. We believe in dressing modestly, no low cut shirts, sleeveless shirts, short skirts or shorts. We don’t cuss. My Mormon friend at Summit was offered a hundred dollars if she would just say one cuss word, it was right there in front of her. She refused.
Mormons also believe in modern-day prophets, and God didn’t dump us here with no specific person called to act a mouthpiece between His world and ours to help us along our way. We get modern-day revelations to help us choose right from wrong, especially in these days when that line always seems to be blurred. Joseph Smith Jr. was our first prophet, the one who restored the church and translated the Book of Mormon from Golden Plates he was led to.
All of the more current, non-Biblical set of standards where given to us though God by our prophets. The first prophet of the modern world was Joseph Smith, as I mentioned. Maybe you’ve heard of him? They seem to make fun of him of a few TV shows. I don’t think this is necessary, but it seems that this occurs to anyone who believes differently than the norm. Buddah, Ghandi, Muhammad, along with Joseph Smith have all appeared on shows such as South Park and Family Guy, all being made into a joke.
I really could talk forever about my religion, but unfortunately this is a blog, not a novel. Later in the year I will write more blogs, and they will most likely be based on some Mormon view or belief, so I just wanted to prepare you.

This is going to be kind of weird because I don’t attend your school lol. I go to Pasadena Memorial High School and our newspaper staff is wanting to go online. So our teacher told us to check out this newspaper site. I am also a Mormon and I would just like to say it’s realyawesome that you have the courage to publish this for your peers and others to see. Sometimes it’s a hard subject to talk about, so good job and thank you for making my day 🙂

Amazing story, Breanna. Mormonism has always been a religion I’ve been curious about but have never been educated. Your story (and the links) gave me a very good overview. I also sympathize with you. I’m Catholic and I face prejudices in my religion every day. You may not hear this enough from all of us but just so you know, you’re awesome 🙂

Great story. I think family guy and south park are ridiculous when it comes to making fun of religion especially when people take their religion seriously. I think it’s awesome your so dedicated to your faith. Getting up that early shows commitment. You go girl!
