Show Choir Hosts Lollapalooza

Legacy Magic Show Choir will teach fifth to eighth grade MISD students, who may want to join high school show choir, performance techniques in their workshop, The Show Choir Lollapalooza. The sponsor, Mr. Zrust, and members of the club will teach dance, singing and theatre techniques.

“You have to be a triple threat to be in show choir,” Mr. Zrust said.

On Saturday, March 6, the participants will work from 9:00-4:30, and the show choir members will teach them the choreography, the music and how to perform two or three songs. Later, at six-thirty the same day, the performers will come back and put on a show. Junior Remington Mullenix will help teach the children the skills they need to know for the exhibition.

“I’m excited to get to work with kids, and teach them things I know, that they may not know,” Mullenix said, “I get to help them become better musicians and artists.”

Mullenix had the opportunity to go to the Young Americans workshop last year. A program similar to Legacy’s Lollapalooza.

“I did Young Americans last year, and it was encouraging to see older kids help younger kids have an amazing experience,” Mullenix said. “I hope the kids that come to our workshop will get the same experience I did, and see that music can be a blast.”

According to Zrust, the Choir Department hopes this workshop will help their program grow. It’s aimed at those who would be interested in being part of, not only show choir, but also high school choir or theatre.

“We’re trying to increase our numbers, and there’s really no better way than to involve elementary school kids and middle school kids to give them a taste of what they’re going to be doing here at high school level,” Zrust said.

The attendees will work on stage presence, facial expression and costuming in addition to the basic singing, dancing and acting. Teaching the dance category of the workshop excites Mullenix the most.

“Dancing will be fun, because teaching kids to dance is always a blast,” Mullenix, “It’ll be really exciting to throw in different styles of dance, because I’ll get to show them my style.”

Mullenix feels the workshop will get kids to appreciate show choir as a form of art and hopes they will be as enthusiastic and energetic about it as he is.

“I love show choir,” Mullenix said. “It’s taught me that you can have a lot of fun doing what you love. I got to show my talents and my passions at the same time.”
