Wild Wild West

Taylor Swift had just won a Video Music Award. In the space of a few seconds, the 19-year-old had joined the ranks of female musicians that include Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson, Madonna and Whitney Houston. And then, Kanye West came. This is when things got really awkward.

“I mean no disrespect,” West told Swift and the audience as he unexpectedly walked onstage, interrupting the singer’s acceptance speech. “But Beyonce had one of the greatest videos of all time!”

There were boos, there were some awkward laughs. The cameras even cut to a flabbergasted Beyonce Knowles, who looked like she didn’t know whether to look flattered or humiliated. By the end of the night, West’s faux pas became the thing “everyone was talking about” and West was once again in the spotlight for his award show antics.

Few people were in defense of West. His actions were almost universally acknowledged as rude and uncalled for and as a nation we all learned that the quickest way to make America despise you is to make Taylor Swift cry.

Even West himself sensed that he made a low blow and before the Video Music Awards had ended Sunday night, West posted an apologetic, yet loud, apology on his blog. (Writer’s note; the blog post itself was actually posted in all caps.)

“I’M SOOOOO SORRY TO TAYLOR SWIFT AND HER FANS AND HER MOM. I SPOKE TO HER MOTHER RIGHT AFTER AND SHE SAID THE SAME THING MY MOTHER WOULD’VE SAID. SHE IS VERY TALENTED! I LIKE THE LYRICS ABOUT BEING A CHEERLEADER AND SHE’S IN THE BLEACHERS! I’M IN THE WRONG FOR GOING ON STAGE AND TAKING AWAY FROM HER MOMENT…I’M SORRY TO MY FANS IF I LET YOU GUYS DOWN!!!! I’M SORRY TO MY FRIENDS AT MTV….I’M NOT CRAZY YALL, I’M JUST REAL. SORRY FOR THAT!!! I REALLY FEEL BAD FOR TAYLOR AND I’M SINCERELY SORRY!!! MUCH RESPECT!!!!!”

Kanye just interrupted the Swayze funeral to remind them Michael Jackson had the greatest funeral of all time. 😀
