After Legacy’s One-Act Play advanced from zone, to district, to area, then to region, for the second time in MISD’s history a One-Act Play advances to the State UIL competition in May. Legacy’s One-Act troupe will compete against the top eight plays at the 4A level at Bass Hall on campus of the University of Texas.
Fine Arts Director Russ Sanders and Director Melanie McIntyre have set up a free performance of ‘Leading Ladies’ May 4 at Willie Pigg Auditorium.
Below is therideronline.com review which originally posted before the Area compeition.
REVIEW: One Act, Two Ladies, Three Sets, Countless Laughs [by Clarke Rahrig]
As the end of the year draws near, all the different organizations compete in their respective UIL competitions. I am particuarly interested in One-Act. I have followed and watched them since their first public performance.
I want to write a review but I’m not too great at it, so I’m just going to mention some of my favorite quirks or traits of the different characters in the play.
- Dillon Ford and Darius Moore start the play off with Dillon welcoming everyone to a Moose Club meeting and eventually Darius (sitting in the audience) yells out “This meeting is boring!” and storms out of the auditorium.
- Olivia Hebert gets the first big laugh from me in the latest revision of the play as she walks onto the stage dragging her IV slowly with her across the stage.
- I’ve enjoyed Hunter Canedy and Trevor Callerman’s performance as women and find myself laughing out of my seat every time Trevor first bursts into the stage area dressed in a dress.
- Sophie Smith’s ditsy character of a car hop entertains me with her subtle little ticks in the background of scenes as she twirls her gum while sitting on the edge of the couch.
- Nick Jimenez’s angry pastor character investigating with his enraged phone calls to the private detective.
- Kat Elvrom keeps Hunter and Trevor on edge throughout the play by always walking in on them out of their lady characters. My favorite moment of hers occurs when she walks in on Trevor yelling at Hunter and they plays it off as Trevor singing “Jack be Nimble.”
- Wyatt Zalatoris gets a big laugh from me when he gets his mentoring from Trevor’s character an eventually ends up looking ape like because he is trying to look loose while reciting his lines. He also later quickly recite his lines after he was told to say them more calmly.
The combined performance of all the cast members creates a really great perform in a show that I’ve enjoyed four times.
I want to send out a big pat on the back to the crew as well, especially Madi Ward the stage manger. They help set up and tear down the set and with all the quick changes that Hunter and Trevor go through. The crew is the living breathing underlying machine that drives the performance just as much as the actors on stage.

This is a good story. The one act play is wonderful. It goes well with the strengths of the actors and they all look brilliant. Wonderful job to the actors and the stage crews.
