Did the Twerk Work?

Did+the+Twerk+Work%3F

Recently, I’ve heard a lot of people talking about the VMA’s (video music awards). Out of all the VMA performances that have been shown online, I only watched one – and that was already more than I needed to watch. Now don’t get me wrong, I love music and greatly enjoy watching musical presentations, but to see Miley Cyrus, whom I still think of as Hannah Montana, twerking on Robin Thicke, a married man, well that was a bit more then I would have liked to see.

While watching it, my first few thoughts had mainly to do with her choice of costumes. At first, I greatly disliked her clothing. Then, when she switched from a teddy bear costume to a skin colored bikini, all I could think of was “Is that clothing?” and “There is no way that could be considered clothing!”.

The performance itself wasn’t as long as it seemed to me, but maybe that’s because I was cringing the entire time I watched it. As much as I would like to laugh this off, I can’t. I’ve tried seeing it from her perspective, but no matter what I do or how I try to see it, I cannot understand what she was thinking when she did this. Did she think this was attractive in some way? Does she have no morals? Of course I think that we should be able to do as we would like, but there is a limit to that. Isn’t there?

And it isn’t just her fault, either- why would Robin Thicke choreograph this with her? I can’t understand why he would be okay with such a performance with Miley Cyrus. I was discussing this with a friend of mine, and she said to me, “He should have pushed her off the stage or something. Hopefully onto a sharp object.” Now personally, I don’t think that she should have been hurt over it, but he should have at least walked away from it. Yes, he was in front of a large crowd of people, and he would have embarrassed her, but he is a married man. His wife had the “lovely” experience of watching a twenty one year old, half naked girl twerk on her husband. I think that sounds like a horrible experience. But you know, it is Miley’s choice.

As much as I dislike her actions, I can’t judge her specifically for it. I don’t believe I have the right to judge anyone, since I myself am not perfect. But isn’t it our job as humans to be the best we can be? Shouldn’t that be everyone’s goal in life? Maybe I’m wrong, but that’s what I believe. I believe Miley could try at least a little harder to be a good role model. After all, there are still many children who look up to “Hannah Montana” as their inspiration, and she isn’t being the role model she should for them. But hey- maybe twerking on married men in front of thousands of people is the cool thing to do. She can do whatever she would like to do, but I won’t be watching her.

Hello! This is my second year as an editor for The Rider, and I’m very happy to be here! I do some of the art for the journalism department, too. A bit about me: I have way too many hobbies and not enough time. I like to write, edit this newspaper, collect quotes, play video games, draw, take pictures, travel, and a lot of other things. I spend most of my free time either helping out at my church, finishing my AP art projects in Mr. Mason’s room or completing and editing stories in the journalism room. I have “slight” obsessions with The Beatles and Harry Potter. Hopefully this time next year, I’ll be writing for UNT’s newspaper!   “I am determined to be cheerful and happy in whatever situation I may find myself. For I have learned that the greater part of our misery or unhappiness is determined not by our circumstance but by our disposition.” -Martha Washington Did I mention that I love collecting quotes?
