Thanksgiving. The time to eat and laugh about funny times with your family. Or not. Everyone talks about the good things. What about the bad things that no one likes about Thanksgiving? Here are the Top 10 Things to Hate About Thanksgiving:
10. The Cleaning-
There’s the cleaning of the house. Mom wants the house clean when you come back home from your glorious feast. She doesn’t want to trip over things as she walks into the house, full of turkey, and practically about to pass out.
9. The Preparation-
Mom and Dad want to look nice for Thanksgiving. That includes you too sadly. They wouldn’t think that showing up at grandma’s house in sweatpants and a t-shirt would be very appropriate for the occasion. After fighting mom on what to wear, you give up, put on a nice dress shirt or dress (maybe even a tie for the men), and you load up the car with the smells of delicious food you can’t wait to cram your face in.
8. The Leaving of the House-
Then there is the leaving of the house. Dad is already upset about the fact that y’all are late. Mom is still putting on makeup and your running back into the house to grab your phone charger cause you know today is gonna be a long day.
7. The Arrival-
You’ve finally arrived. Its been what feels like forever in the car but you really know it hasn’t been that long. The entire car ride to grandmas was just the beginning of conversations you’ll hear throughout the night. You try drowning out the conversations with music but after awhile you get tired of listening to your favorite album on repeat. Walking up to the front door of Grandma’s feels like your trying to remember how to walk.
6. The Exchange-
Here comes the most dreadful thing you worry about on Thanksgiving. The exchange of the greeting. It seems to be a awkward family tradition that has been going on for years and it will be going on for years and years to come. You absolutely hate it. It could just be that awkward hug from grandpa or even a kiss on lips from grandma. You promise yourself that you’ll never let your kids endure this.
5. The Waiting- The waiting for dinner feels like forever, but like the forever you felt in the car. The entire time is full of “Oh boy, look how big you’ve gotten since the last time I’ve seen you.” and “Your still in the sixth grade right?” Dinner seems like it can’t get here any quicker.
4. The Food-
The food has been laid out. You see all the “delicious foods” that your family has brought out to this special occasion. There’s your uncle’s “mystery” flavor gravy, your aunt’s macaroni salad your mom’s “unique” cranberry sauce and grandma’s “special recipe” for the turkey. Deliciousness.
3. The Dinner-
The dinner is one of the most family times of Thanksgiving, right? Sitting at the adults table is complete chaos. There’s what seems to be political debates going on both sides of the table. Going back and forth across the table is “incorrect” stories and political views. Its a war zone. It feels like you’ve stepped back in time and you’re watching a couple of kindergartens having a food fight. After a while, you’ve decided to pick up your plate and walk over to the kids table to enjoy your food with yelling and screaming coming from people the appropriate age.
2. The Silence-
The after dinner silence. its a little unnerving. But all it is is your family passed on the couch from all the turkey and mash potatoes consumed. You begin to wonder if everyone has died or if there was some poison in the “unique” cranberry sauce you forgot to eat.
1. The Goodbyes-
The goodbyes are the worst part of Thanksgiving day. Even through all the annoying and obscure things you went through throughout the day, you did them with your family and you love your family. Your kinda glad and laugh about how the family argued over who made the best apple pie. The goodbye hugs are heartbreaking and you might, just might, catch a tear in your eye. You already can’t wait for next year.
