Whether it’s coming from headphones in the school halls or speakers in a truck, everyone loves music. But there’s always that favorite song, the one that’s better than all the others, the song that can flip your mood around in a matter of seconds. These five tracks are just that for Legacy students.
“I Don’t Care About You”- Cody Johnson (2011)
This track starts off slow and mellow, like a pretty ballad, with Cody Johnson’s deep, honey-like voice resonating over the soft drums and six-string. It’s the kind of song that makes you want to pick up a hairbrush or a water bottle and sing along in two-part harmony. The guitar quickens as the chorus builds and Cody rocks out, expressing his frustration towards a toxic relationship. The upbeat, fast-paced song is a great display of Cody’s vocals.
“[The song] really makes you feel like you can relate,” sophomore Abbi Standefer said. “It just makes you happy.”
“Without Me”- Eminem (2002)
“Without Me” is a very different track with a mix of instrumentals that give it a quirky hip-hop, garageband kind of feel. Eminem’s sharp vocals and lyrics cut through the background, adding contrast to the chaos. The song is all about Eminem and how the music world wouldn’t be the same without him. As a rapper, Eminem has a different style, more genuine and relatable. Everything about this song is entertaining and uplifting. It carries a very positive vibe and is a great example of Eminem’s uniqueness.
“It makes me feel important,” sophomore Hannah Milner said. “Like nothing would be the same without me either.”
“Dark Horse”- Katy Perry (2013)
As soon as the track begins, you can hear that it has an extremely pop-techno backbeat. Katy Perry’s voice starts off smooth with the instrumentals at a slightly quicker one-two pace that remains constant throughout every bridge. As her singing gets louder, the background becomes less prevalent and the emotion can be heard in Perry’s voice.
“‘Dark Horse is just very catchy,” sophomore Celeste Estrada said. “It makes me feel like singing and dancing.”
“All Over The Road”- Easton Corbin (2012)
As an emerging country artist, Corbin released his first album, “All Over The Road.” Within months, the title track hit big, becoming his first number one. The infectious tune had constant radio play for weeks. This song has a very summertime-ish beat and it makes you want to be cruising down the road, sun roof down, in a car with your friends. It’s just a feel-good beat.
“It reminds me of the way I drive,” sophomore Zac Shimp said. “All over the road.”
“Carrying Your Love With Me”- George Strait (1997)
Everything about “Carrying Your Love With Me” is relaxing and positive. Released in 1997, this classic country song is a “must have.” The steel guitar along with the acoustics give the song great depth. Right off the bat you can tell that it belongs to George Strait. Strait holds the record for the largest number of number ones (60), including “Carrying Your Love With Me.” This is no surprise, considering the fact that his voice could melt butter; Its the perfect mixture of smooth and twangy.
“It’s just a likeable song,” sophomore Matthew Green said. “Plus, it came out the year I was born.”
