The path to influencer status has become easier through the technological age than ever before, and with the social media app TikTok, it is even simpler. TikTok allowed Brooklyn Van Zandt and Carson Klingman to gain fame overnight.

In 2016, freshman Brooklyn Van Zandt joined the new social media platform and in 2018, senior Carson Klingman joined. In 2020, the two gained a large following with Brooklyn at 600,000 followers, and Carson at 100,000

“I joined TikTok when it was originally Musical.ly because my friends had it and they wanted me to join,” Van Zandt said. “All I did was make random videos for fun, but I ended up getting a bigger following.”

Van Zandt’s followers have grown into a social media following across platforms which she credited as an incorporation of some lifestyle changes.

“I am busier now that social media has become more serious in my life,” Van Zandt said. “Also, more people recognize me in the hallways and at random moments when I’m doing errands or other usual activities.”

Other than their popularity, Van Zandt and Klingman have certain things in common about their TikTok careers. Klingman joined the app without the intention of fame, but they both gained recognition overnight.

“Initially, I joined the app just for fun, and as a place to put funny videos that I had,” Klingman said. “Over time it grew, and I realized I should begin making my own videos.”

While Klingman embraced his new social media following, he worked on his new content and enjoyed the connections he gained with his viewers.

“TikTok has introduced me to plenty of amazing people, Klingman said. “Because of this app, I have gained many friends outside of Texas, and I am grateful for that.”
