“Reagan,” a movie about the life and presidency of Ronald Reagan debuted on August 30, 2024. Starring Dennis Quaid as Ronald Reagan, the movie has grossed $27 million worldwide, but critics give the film a negative review. Rotten Tomatoes scored the film at 18% while audiences scored it at 98%. This divide between audiences and critics is the biggest a film has ever had.
A former KGB operator, who had tracked Reagan since the 1940s, narrates the film. The movie is about Reagan’s fight against the Soviet Union. The movie tells Reagan’s story of fighting communism in Hollywood all the way to fighting it in Washington D.C. The film jumps around different points in Reagan’s life that the KGB operator studied about him.
In the Theater, I was by far the youngest person watching the movie. The movie definitely can bring back some memories for people who lived through the times, but more importantly, can give people hope for the future of the country. The problems that face the country in the movie have a striking resemblance to the problems that face our country today. The economy is unstable. War is inevitable with other countries. If younger people would see this movie they might relate to what Reagan is saying and trying to fix. One of the most powerful scenes in the movie is when Reagan debates Jimmy Carter and asks the American people if they think that The U.S. is in a better place than four years ago.
This might be why the audience rated the movie so highly. The audience isn’t going to the movie for the best storytelling, acting or cinematography. The audience enjoys the movie because they can relate to what is happening and some even remember what they felt during that time and can compare to what they feel now. Most of the audiences seeing this come away with a sense of patriotism after watching a movie where the president truly cared for their country.
This movie is one of the best I’ve seen in a while even though I wasn’t even born yet when he was president. The movie does a good job of following his life events leading up to, during and after the presidency. The end of the movie is the best part. Dennis Quaid narrates Ronald Reagan’s letter to America from when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s while showing Reagan riding his horse for the last time. The scene is very touching and is a great tribute to the late president.
The critics have given the wrong review of this movie. They either had a negative bias going into this movie or they just didn’t get the message that it’s sending to the world. This movie deserves a better rating, because it’s pushing young people away from watching it because of the reviews they are seeing online. If you are interested in the history of the country or just want a good movie to watch, Reagan is the movie for you.
