PTSA cookie sales returned for the 2024-2025 school year Sept. 25. Their return altered how the cookie sales work and the overall price per cookie. These changes benefit the PTSA and should not be changed back to the way previous years’ sales worked.
Unlike past years when PTSA sold two cookies for $1, a single cookie now costs $1. PTSA implemented these price change because of the need to raise more money for PTSA and to cover the cost of cookie supplies. The increased cost also benefits the PTSA which spends the money by putting it back into school by showing teacher appreciation which creates a better environment for educators and by extension students. The change to the price per cookie, while annoying for students, provides more positive benefits such as the ability to have cookie sales multiple days a week every week and providing fun school events and activities such as movie nights. The increased student participation within the school and the environment makes it more positive and engaging for the students who attend which allows better learning to occur.
In years past the only way to buy a cookie was to use physical money. The PTSA changed this policy by allowing students to use tap to pay, Cash App and virtual credit cards as payment. Both forms of payment create a more convenient way for students to purchase cookies. However, when students use their phones to pay, an upcharge on the total price adds to the total cost of a cookie which will increase the positive benefits and the revenue made from cookie sales. The new forms of payment should cause an increase in student willingness to spend more money on cookies for themselves and benefit the PTSA.
Opponents to the price increase feel the cost increased too much. However, the money made from cookie sales goes back into the PTSA, so that they can provide students who are graduating and eligible with scholarships. These scholarships are good for students and the school, and can leave large impacts on the people they help. This causes college to be a more achievable step, especially for students who need financial assistance to attend. College can cost upward of $30,000 per year, so any amount of money that the PTSA can provide can help a student reach their goal of achieving higher education.
Students should accept these changes because they help the PTSA make the school a better place. Cookie sales are essential to many important school processes and students should learn how to work with the changes rather than being angered and annoyed by them.
