Hope for Fame: Students use YouTube to make others laugh

For sophomore Dallas Reid YouTube is not just a website; it’s his side hobby. He goes on at least three times a week and has started uploading homemade videos he’s made for his Ben Barber class.

“I didn’t want to make a poster for Law and Order, so I decided to make a video,” Reid said. “The videos usually turn out to be funny, so I upload them to YouTube.”

Dallas doesn’t focus on attracting viewers, but would rather put a smile on someone’s face with his videos.

“I don’t care about the hits or popularity, I just want to make people laugh,” Reid said. “I want to be viewed as that one guy who’s funny.”

With therideronline launching, students will now be able to subscribe their own YouTube videos to the site and share them with the rest of Legacy. Dallas is considering therideronline to broadcast his videos.

I would rather go on the school website than YouTube, because I would see people I know, instead of random people on YouTube,” he said.

Senior Brandon Zurbriski also uploads videos to YouTube. But he uses the studio at Ben Barber to film his videos for his Media Tech. class, whereas Dallas films in his backyard.

“Any original location for a video is good just as long as it’s not at your house,” Zurbriski said. “No one wants another video sitting in front of the computer.”

Brandon is also interested in the number of views he gets and the comments people leave. He lip-synchs to songs in his videos and has received almost 600 hits in his most popular remake of “I Want it That Way,” by the Backstreet Boys.

“It’s (YouTube) something to do and something you get a little recognition for, and there’s always that little chance of fame,” he said. ”YouTube is something entertaining to do when you’re bored. Everyone wants a good laugh.”

Any Legacy student who has an appropriate video can submit it to therideronline for possible posting on LBTV. Send your video to [email protected].
