A smile grew on AP English language and composition teacher Ms. Alexandra Kim’s face as she watched the success of the event she worked with the National Honor Society to create. This year marks the first year that Ms. Kim sponsors NHS.
“[Becoming the new sponsor of NHS] was really seamless,” Ms. Kim said. “[Mr. McMahan] is one of the most helpful human beings ever and has given me all of the resources. So having his support has been very helpful and made the whole transition really easy, so it’s not been super stressful at all.”
Sponsoring the NHS allows Ms. Kim to work with students to host events that help others.
“The pickleball tournament was the highlight of the fall semester because we put so much time into it, especially the officers that were orchestrating the event,” Ms. Kim said. “Watching the joy on their faces when they realized the event that they put so much time and energy into was a success was such a happy moment for me.”
Members of NHS work closely with Ms. Kim, allowing her to form relationships with students she may not have known otherwise.
“I think [Ms. Kim] really pushes us to be the best version of ourselves, but she also understands that we’re students and that we’re all taking classes,” junior Grayson Prellwitz said. “It’s nice to have someone who understands that you have a lot going on.”
Participating in National Honor Society provides students an opportunity to work together and help each other.
“I like the community,” Prellwitz said. “They’re always there to help you, and you always have people you can fall back on if you don’t understand assignments”
Overall, NHS creates an environment where participants work with each other and Ms. Kim to achieve the goals of the society.
“I love running the NHS because it’s a student-led organization. So it’s something that I oversee and sponsor, but it’s something where all those officers and those people that are involved in National Honor Society are the ones that really run it,” Ms. Kim said. “So I would say that that’s a big benefit because I have such a close relationship with a lot of students.”
