5, 6, 7, 8, go 1, 2, 3, 4. Freshman Jacqueline Casteel performed with the 12th line of JV Silver Spurs. She worked with her teammates to perform, dance and make bonds throughout the year.
“Drill team is an amazing way to make new friends and experience high school in an enjoyable environment,” Casteel said. “[I love] being in a group with people with the same interests as me and having a close-knit group with these people.”
Throughout the year, JV Drill attends sports events and works with varsity to host events for the Silver Spurs.
“My favorite drill team event is football season because we had the opportunity to do our halftime routines and do fun dances on the sidelines,” Casteel said.
Sophomore Kamryn Nolette dances with Casteel on JV. She joined drill team her freshman year.
“[I love] the environment of drill team,” Nolette said. “We’re always inclusive, and it’s easier to learn more on the smaller team.”
JV has 14 girls whereas varsity has 55. The smaller team environment of JV allows Coach Alyssa Estrada to help the girls with more attentive and personal critiques.
“The coaches are very inclusive and nice,” Nolette said. “They make you feel comfortable, and there’s nothing to be scared of asking them. They are very helpful.”
On top of performing at sports events and for the school, drill team competes in their own season. Nolette’s favorite competition dance was “Space Jam,” a fast-paced pro-style dance from her freshman year. This year, JV’s competition dance was a conductor-themed pom.
“[I enjoy] being able to connect with my peers through a sport I enjoy, and being able to perform and showcase the hard work we put into our dances,” Casteel said. “Drill team has taught me time management, and taught me to go out of my comfort zone and be able to experience new things.”
