Sophomore Olivia Butler’s smile illuminates the stage as she feels the bright lights beam. She remains prepared for her show after many weeks of rehearsals, while balancing schoolwork, competitive dance and serving as a worship leader at her church. She powers through her fatigue and sore throat, committing to her role with everything she has.
“I started doing theater in second grade through my church’s summer drama camp,” Butler said. “After seeing my love for the stage, my parents encouraged me to start auditioning for local community theaters and school productions.”
As Butler’s passion for performing blossomed, she began to explore various ways to experience the bright stage lights.
“I first danced when I was in preschool, but took a break until I was 9, when I found my passion for dance again,” Butler said. “Having already been involved in musical theater, taking dance allowed me an advantage during theatre auditions.”
Given the advantages of doing theater and dance at the same time, Butler uses them to improve and grow her passion for the stage daily.
“Not only have theater and dance taught me the importance of dedication and teamwork, but they have given me confidence and creativity,” Butler said. “I love both theater and dance because they allow me to express myself through creative freedom, express my emotions and work with the people I love.”
Butler’s love for performing originated from those she looks up to and inspires her daily, including her family, teachers and friends.
“Growing up, my dad has been the worship leader at my church and continually expresses the art of singing and performing,” Butler said. “Legacy’s theater directors, Mr. Ferman and Ms. Corley, show their passion for theater daily and always encourage me to pursue my dreams.”
As Butler frequently receives inspiration from others, she stands out as a motivator and star student to others.
“I am associated with Main Stage Classic Theater and Olivia is a performer within their program,” Ms. Corley said. “I got to meet her well before she came to Legacy and when she joined our program, it was even better.”
After witnessing Butler’s talent previously, Ms. Corley admires how Butler motivates fellow cast members and leads others to success no matter what.
“Although she can be hard on herself, she always has a great attitude about everything and brings out the best in people,” Ms. Corley said. “Even if she has a lead role, she wants the whole production to be successful, so she does her part in making sure that everybody feels as prepared as possible.”
As Butler’s leadership traits cause her to stand out, the pressure she puts on herself leads to stressors and anxiety.
“I want her to know that it is okay to fail,” Ms. Corley said. “Mistakes are opportunities for growth and [as long as] she keeps pushing forward while staying determined, she will be successful.”
Although the burden of perfection puts pressure on her, Butler perseveres and uses this challenge to prepare her for the future.
“My current plan is to pursue acting in college and work towards becoming a film actress,” Butler said. “I also plan to keep dancing in my life through performing in musicals and possibly teaching.”
Since the moment her passion sparked, Butler has dedicated every day to working toward her unstoppable dreams.
“Do not let anyone tell you your dreams are out of reach,” Butler said. “As long as you have trust, faith and dedication, you can accomplish anything.”
