Walk down the halls and notice surroundings, on the walls it’s mostly posters saying to try out for cheerleading or drill team, join Band and Key Club. Joining those clubs usually includes a cost.
Joining the cheerleading squad can cost a little more than $1,000. The girls must pay for their uniforms, camp clothes, backpacks, jackets and t-shirts.
“We do this so everyone can do well,” junior varsity Cheerleading Coach Ms. Lopez said.
The cost to be on the Silver Spurs is another $1,000. The girls must pay for boots, practice clothes, bag, warm up jacket and jazz shoes. The district pays for the uniform that must be worn during football games.
“It costs a lot this year, but next year, I’m lowering the cost to about $550,” Drill Team Coach Mrs. Parlin said.
According to students, Key Clubs cost, compared to these other clubs, was small. There’s only a $15 joining fee, not including the annual t-shirt.
The Legacy Band’s annual cost often changes. Some years, they may take a band trip that costs between $250 to $300. Normally, they each spend close to $100 total on uniforms, shoes, gloves, and a bag. Without adding in $80 for a school instrument and $47 on a metronome and a clip.
“I think our costs are comparable to other schools,” Mrs. Goodwin said.
The color guard’s cost was slightly higher. They also may take a color guard trip. It could cost anywhere between $800 and $1000. Then they spend at least $416 on their uniform, tights, gloves, shoes, equipment, a warm up suit, a hoodie and their band t-shirt. They also pay for contest feels and lost music.
“If a student wants to be in it, we’ll do whatever we can. We don’t want the price to be prohibitive,” Mrs. Goodwin said.
