Academic Decathlon Team Advances to State

Legacy’s Academic Decathlon team will compete on Feb. 26-28 at San Antonio College at the State level after being chosen as a wild card following their second place victory at the district tournament they competed in this weekend.

“We didn’t expect to do as well as we did initially,” Riley Reidmiller said. “It was kind of disappointing coming in second.”

Eighty-seven students applied to be in Mr. Austin’s AcaDec class, but only 35 were allowed to take the course. Of the 35 students enrolled in the class, nine students are divided into the Honor, Scholastic and Varsity categories and compete in 10 events. Legacy students placed in all events.

“For us to get a medal in every event is pretty nice,” AcaDec sponsor Mr. Austin said. “Most schools can’t say that.”

According to Reidmiller, the attitudes of her teammates lightened the mood of the atmosphere and helped make the tournament more enjoyable. To her surprise, she placed in enough events to earn her the title, “New Gideon,” referring to her teammate Gideon Von Bose who won six medals last year.

“I did a lot better than I thought I’d do,” Reidmiller said. “I never would have imagined I’d get seven medals.”

Despite being a second year program, the AcaDec team held first place throughout the tournament before falling to second after getting ninth place out of eleven in their final event.

“I think we were more concerned with individual events that we overlooked the main event,” Reidmiller said. “Now we know what to work on and that will be our primary focus.”
