University Interscholastic League officials announced the 2010-2012 realignments which moves Legacy to 5A. Timberview also moved up to District 5A-A along with MHS, and because of a slightly lower student population, Summit moves to 4A.
Starting in the 2010-2011 school year, Legacy joins Duncanville, Mansfield, Midlothian, Cedar Hill, and many others in 5A district competition.
Increased population means a larger potential talent pool to choose from for all of the schools, tougher competition in UIL, and increased prestige in any competitive victories.
“We want to be in the spotlight,” Coach Chris Melson said. “There’s nobody on the schedule we can’t compete with or beat, so we just have to work hard, everyday. We want to be the best.”
Although Melson predicts a more challenging schedule, he does not plan on altering his coaching. He plans to build on the success of the last season.
“We look forward to the challenge,” Coach Melson said. “We’re not scared of them, but we definitely respect them. Obviously it will be tougher competition, and I think Legacy is ready for that.”
Because of the change to 5A from 4A, the band will compete in state again next year. Band Director Renee Goodwin is also optimistic about entering the higher level of competition, but acknowledges the challenges the relatively small band must overcome.
“Size will be the number one factor. And funding. The bigger schools come from towns with fewer high schools, so more money goes to their programs. We’re a small 5A band, but we’re a good one.”
Academic UIL Coordinator Brandon Austin expects Legacy academic competition to perform even better in 5A.
“It’s a great district for academics. We should do pretty well,” Mr. Austin said. “I really believe the 5A district we’re moving in to, as far as academic competition, will be much easier.”

@Morgan
Our entire district will now be aligned to compete with all other 5A schools in all competition(namely, UIL). That includes Band, Football, Academics, etc. Other alignments haven’t been announced. But you can check the UIL website here http://www.uil.utexas.edu/
