Mansfield ISD celebrates its hundredth anniversary February 4 at Pirate Coffee with the sealing of the centennial time capsule. Every school in the district contributed something to the capsule and a slideshow of the contributions can be found here.
“The time capsule seemed like a natural part to our attempt as a committee to develop a comprehensive collection of events and activities to recognize and celebrate this special year,” Centennial Committee chair Patricia Ayala said.
Legacy gave a DVD of spirited photos and a brochure from the opening of the school. In addition to the time capsule, a centennial celebration T-shirt designed by Summit High School senior Murphy La.
“Mansfield is a great community and local businesses are always willing to support our schools,” Mrs. Ayala said. “Their participation and sponsorship of the February Centennial Dining Event was just icing on the cake.”
Throughout February, local businesses will offer discounts to those wearing their Centennial celebration T-shirts. For instance, at the time capsule sealing, Pirate coffee will offer one dollar off of any drink and a free fresh baked cookie.
“[The shirt] will make me try new places in Mansfield,” sophomore Brianna McKuin said.
Since its founding on May 22, 1909, MISD has expanded to include over 94 square miles in Tarrant and Johnson counties, 21 elementary schools, six middle schools, six intermediate schools, four high schools, and a technological school.
“I think even though we are a larger city, Mansfield has retained some of it’s small town feel,” Mr. Wright’s Assistant Barbara Chambers said. “I think it has a lot of community. I think the growth is a positive thing, everything that’s happened to the school district has been a positive thing.”
Chambers and her husband have lived in Mansfield all their lives and when Mrs. Chambers started working for the district, she did not even have a phone and women could not wear pants.
