Chambers Selected as Teacher of the Year: 39-year Veteran Scheduled to Retire in May

English teacher Sherri Chambers was given the Teacher of the Year Award by other Legacy teachers on April 5. Other teachers nominated for the award were Mr. Mallett, Mrs. Schimming and Mrs. Burkett.

“I was shocked. I could not believe that I had won because my competition was magnificent. I didn’t even expect to come in in the top two,” Mrs. Chambers said. “I was really thrilled, it was really an honor.”

Chambers has been in Mansfield since 1996, at Legacy since it opened, and has built a rapport with the faculty in that time.

“Mrs. Chambers is the bomb diggity,” Mr. Austin and 2008 Teacher of the Year said.

Chambers has taught grades six through nine in her career, but says freshemen are her favorite to teach because the students are capable of deeper thinking and better behaved than the younger students.

“She doesn’t take crap from anybody, she’s really strict but it teaches you,” sophomore Rachel Romo said.

Chambers never planned on becoming a teacher. In college she majored in Chemistry, History, and Linguistics before moving into a Literature major and discovering a love for teaching.

“I enjoy working with students because they always do things that you never thought they could do,” Mrs. Chambers said. “It’s always fun to teach and see people learn.”

After 39 years of teaching, Mrs. Chambers will retire at the end of this year.  She hopes to visit to Ireland and see her family in retirement.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this year because I know this is my last year, and it as been fun,” Mrs. Chambers said. “I loved [teaching], it was so much fun. It’s never boring, there are always funny things that happened.”

Mrs. Chambers is currently my teacher, and I have to say that she is amazing! She helps you when you don’t understand something, and doesn’t get frustrated when you still don’t understand, she just wants to help you get better, and do good in school!

    I’m glad to hear this!
I think her students who go on to college after having taken a class from her will quickly realize that she has prepared them well. Congratulations Mrs. Chambers!

I had Mrs. Chambers my freshman year and honestly I think she’s one of the best teachers I’ve had. She’s patient, kind, and just a great teacher all around. Personally, I don’t think she gets the kind of credit she deserves either. I know there are students who have had her and don’t exactly appreciate her, but trust me you will eventually learn to.

I was thrilled to see Mrs. Chambers get Teacher of the Year. She truly is an amazing teacher and I’ve had the great pleasure to be a student of hers my Freshman year. Mrs. Chambers encouraged me to reach my potential and be the best I could possibly be, whether in a classroom setting or in the real world. As a result, she has become one of my mentors. It’s sad to hear she will be retiring this year, but very worth all of her hardwork and dedication the past years.
