FALS teachers have pursued a Partners in Technology class from the beginning and this year, technology teacher Mrs. Harris made that possible. In the class, each general education student will assist one to two FALS students in learning how to type.
“I think because it’s an everyday skill it will help them in the workforce and in their personal life,” teacher Megan Mosavian said.
Class begins with a 30 minute warm-up of typing in MicroType. Many students can type and do their own work however others might need extra assistance. Next, Mrs. Harris will have an assignment for the general education and the FALS students to work on together.
“[Everyone] needs to learn how to use the equipment properly,” teacher Karen Johnson said. “Unfortunately, some of the students aren’t patient enough to learn.”
According to teachers Sherry Parker and Ms. Mosavian, Partners in Technology will help FALS students with skill-building more than art. They believe art was more therapeutic and computers can help them later in life.
“Computers are a thing that will never go away,” Ms. Parker said. “They like to learn about them and they like the interaction with the other students.”
Many FALS students aren’t vocal but can type. In addition to typing, the general education students help the class learn to use e-mail.
“I just like helping them and knowing it will help them out outside of school,” junior Danielle Reisdorfer said.
