“It’s a really good opportunity for all ages and looks great on a college application,” PTSA Reflections Chairperson Starrlette Gerik said. ”It also makes seniors eligible for scholarships later on in the year.”
Although the theme and deadline post on the PTA Reflections Website at the beginning of the semester, high schools suffer from time restraints because of extra course loads and projects.
“I used to require my art students to enter the Reflections Contest,” art teacher David Mason said. “A couple weeks just isn’t enough time to create a quality piece of art on top of our regular assignments.”
Mrs. Gerik announced the contest at the PTSA meetings and made efforts to have flyers posted whenever she could.
“I can’t do Reflections this year because they didn’t inform us in time. Unless they give the teachers information about it we won’t even think about it,” junior Haven Berbel said. “If they told us the theme at the beginning of the year and kept reminding us, we could have time to prepare and create a better idea that fits the theme and ourselves perfectly.”
A group of students will complete a work of art in the time they have before the deadline.
“I’m disappointed that I won’t be able to use my Reflections piece for the AP exam in May because it won’t be back until after the admission date for the test,” junior Jackie Millett said. “I’m going to try and squeeze a good painting out before it’s due, but I’ll have to use most of my spare time and probably some of my valuable AP art class time.”
