As the Anime club members filed into Mr.Garners classroom , Anime club President, junior Brianna Alicea-Smith Wrote the meeting’s agenda on the board. “Anime Club” was written in big letters and underlined, “More fundraising”, “Other stuff”, “???”, “Profit” were scribbled under the title in green Expo marker.
Juniors Haven Berbel, Emily McWhirt and Brianna Alicea-Smith gather around the board adding another to the list in blue marker, “Hetalia horror stories.” They continue to talk amongst themselves and then turn around to face the other members.
“Sit.” Alicea-Smith said while pointing down, “Thank you.”
The members sit down in the desks closest to the front, eyes glued to the president as she begun the meeting.
“First order of business, fundraising. If anyone has any ideas tell her or me,” Alicea-Smith said jabbing her thumb towards Berbel and McWhirt.
Junior Joseph Johns hunched over in his seat eyes glued to his game on his hand-held gaming device while other members shared their ideas.
“Steal radios and sell them,” junior Drew Alers said while sipping her soda.
“We go on street corners and say we make you laugh for money,” senior Armando Soriano suggested.
“What about Genghis Grill? Because I know they do fundraisers so call or go up there,” Alicea-Smith continued.
The fundraising is to help Anime club members save up for memberships for A-Kon, an annual Anime convention held in Dallas. The memberships are $40 now for three days and $45 after March first.
Soriano moved to a seat closer to the front, Peace Tea in hand, as the meeting moves to the topic of the convention.
Junior William Rogers raises his hand. “Question, what if you have the money but don’t have a way to get the ticket?”
“Go online and print it off, get address and send it off,” McWhirt says with an exaggerated wave of her hand and then takes a drink of her Dr.Pepper.
“A-Kon is getting huge, people are coming down from New York,” Berbel explains.
“Hajji come here,” Rogers motioned to the seat in front of him, Soriano moved at the sound of his nick name and sat down in the seat he previously moved from and drinks more of his tea.
Berbel, Alicea-Smith and McWhirt continued to explain A-Kon and tell of their previous experiences.
“The badges are only to get in certain rooms,” Berbel clarified for the members preparing to go to the event for the first time.”
“Keep in mind that the Dealers’ Room is very crowded,” McWhirt said.
“It’s like a labyrinth,” Alicea-Smith added, “You turn the corner “Where am I?.”
Berbel continued to describe A-Kon and tells stories that happened to her. Berbel, Alicea-Smith and McWhirt get absorbed in their conversation.
Berbel turned to the rest of the members, “Any anime going ons?”
“Anime Matsuri, March 18, if you wanna go to Houston it’s a four hour drive, I’ll be there,” McWhiirt suggests.
Berbel begins to tell stories of misbehaving con attendees, and how to behave at anime conventions.
“There’s a book with con etiquette in the book,” Berbel adds.
The members begin to share with each other stories they have heard or experienced first hand. McWhirt retrieves every ones attention again.
“I have bleach,” McWhirt says as she walks up to Mr.Garner’s desk DVD case in hand, “That’s all I have, enjoy it.”
Everyone turns to face the back of the room where the screen was already pulled down as Rogers turns off the lights and the room falls silent as the show begins.
