Annual Fitness Gram testing, held during English classes, will begin on March 7. Texas requires every high school to test the physical status of all students. Those who are attending TCC English classes will get taken out of another class to take the test with other students who don’t take English on campus.
“I think the athletic area is important, to make sure our youth are physically fit, hopefully carrying that to their adult years,” Coach Tim Kilgore said.
Students wait for the test and their results, some prepared and some not.
“I haven’t taken a physical class all year. I’m in trouble,” sophomore Colt Taylor said.
A report card will be sent home to parents to see where their child ranks with other teenagers their same height, weight, and age. Many doubt the validity of the paper results on their fitness report card.
“It said I was fat and not in shape when I’m skinny and in band. It is totally inaccurate,” senior David Fox said.
Senior Jenna Yates agrees with the inaccuracy of the fitness gram, but admits it might be necessary.
“A lot of people just don’t try because they don’t think it’s important,” Yates said. “I don’t like it, but I know a lot of people could use more physical activity because we’re out of shape.”
