The Academic Decathlon team closed the season with success as Legacy received five medals at the San Antonio State Meet this past weekend.
Senior Laura Baker, Legacy’s top honor student, placed third in Economics. Senior Amanda Hargett-Granato, Legacy’s top scholastic student, placed third in Art. Senior Sammi Singarella placed third in her essay. Senior Austin Bailey placed third in his essay. The top scorers on the team in each category were Baker in honors, Hargett-Granato in scholastic, and junior Autumn McGaha in varsity.
“The trip was great,” AcaDec coach and Physics teacher John Davis said. “We did better than we ever did. We went to state and won five medals, that’s a new record for Legacy.”
AcaDec students enjoyed themselves at their meet and made the most out of their competition opportunities. Team members prepared for the meet by studying the materials, reviewing, and critiquing each other.
“I don’t expect to have so many medal winners, but I wasn’t surprised,” Mr. Davis said. “They represented this school with excellent behavior and made us proud to be associated with them.”
Singarella received first in essay despite specializing in a different topic in her studies. Singarella began participating in AcaDec this year and became a part of the class to spend time with friends.
“Overall it was a really wonderful team bonding experience and I did expect us to do well,” Singarella said. “We have a lot of people who are really good at specializing in [events].”
