The varsity gym went dark, the crowd left wondering what would happen next. Then a message appeared on about 100 iPad screens glowing with “We <3 Kyra,” leaving freshman David Hinkle in a state of shock. “It was amazing,” Hinkle said. “I have never seen anything like it before.” Before L.U.C.K week began, this year’s candidate 9-year old Kyra Olsen, lost her battle with Rhabdmyosarcoma (cancerous tumors of the muscles connecting to the bones). Olsen died Jan. 8, however StuCo members decided to honor her memory with a goal to raise $15,000 from all fund raisers, including the glow run, two pep rallies, the Teenagers and Tiaras pageant, and a karaoke night. The first activity, the glow run, was Jan. 27. It was a was a two mile run/walk at Katherine Rose park. “The Tinker Bell Trot was amazing because we got to go out and walk with our friends for a good cause,” sophomore Aubrey Copeland said. “Everyone was wearing neon and glow sticks and we just walked two miles. It was organized and put together nicely.” The second activity was a pep rally Jan. 28, during fourth period, to kick of the week. Students paid $1 to attend the pep rally. There was a slam dunk contest, the bald brigade made an appearance and several girls cut their hair for a donation to Locks of Love. “The pep rally was really fun. I liked the dunk contest,” sophomore Ashley Felan said. On Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. in the PAC was the Teenagers and Tiaras beauty pageant. “It was really cool, all the girls looked really pretty,” sophomore Kelsey David said. On Jan. 31, choir hosted a karaoke night and it was also Chick-fil-A night. “I was more than happy to help out. I love Chick-fil-A,” sophomore Daniel Drzycimski said. Finally on Feb. 1 L.U.C.K. week ended with a pep rally during ninth period. Over the course of the week, students raised $7,291.53 to send the Olsen family on a Disney cruise, one of Kyra’s final wishes, and help with other expenses. “Based on the challenges we had this year, we had outstanding results,” Dena Schimming said.

My son, Connor Zalesak, is the one who played the guitar for pep rally at the end of Luck Week. Do you happen to have a video of him playing his guitar ? If you do, would it be possible for me to get that from you?
