Junior Larissa Garza won the 2013 Legacy Legend competition Feb. 1 with the song Turning Page by Sleeping at Last. Groove Zoo, a band consisting of seniors Alex Cameron, Sean Henderson and Connor Zalesak and junior Jake Sutton, took second place with Feeling Good by Anthony Newell.
Legacy Legend, a talent show organized by choir teacher Mr. Adam Zrust, incorporated talents other than singing, gave away cash prizes. First place winner Larissa Garza won a cash prize of $50, and the second place winners of Groove Zoo got $25.
“I felt encouraged,” Jake Sutton, who plays drums for Groove Zoo, said. “It wasn’t a great performance.”
Groove Zoo formed in August of 2012, with Cameron as lead singer and rhythm guitar, Henderson as bass guitar, Zalesak as lead guitar, and Sutton on drums. Sutton hopes to pursue a career in music, and sees this as a good stepping stone on the way to success.
“It makes me feel more secure in the industry,” Sutton said.
Garza first performed her song as a Christmas present for her boyfriend. She then decided to use it for Legacy Legend, where she played the piano along with the song.
“I was [enthused]. It was my first time playing the piano in front of a crowd,” Garza said.
Garza practiced Turning Page for a month before performing it. She also felt encouraged by winning first place. Garza hopes to pursue a career in the music industry.
“It puts a good thought in my head that I have the ability to accomplish more than I thought I could,” Garza said.
