Linda Jobe Middle School hosts a fundraiser for men’s prostate and testicular cancer foundations throughout November titled “Movember.” The Movember movement focuses on awareness and education of men’s health. Throughout November, teachers at Jobe are growing mustaches in order to raise awareness.
Adam Jinkens, the health teacher at Jobe, stumbled across a YouTube video of Movember last year and took interest. Jinkens introduced the school to the fundraiser and convinced his colleagues to join in. Movember participants call themselves “Mo Bros” and “Mo Sistas.”
Movember relies on the donations and voluntary efforts of the community.
“I fortunately don’t know anyone who has gone through prostate or testicular cancer,” Jenkins said. “I’m doing this because I know guys, in general, don’t necessarily go to the doctor willingly. I just want to help spread the message and be a part of an organization devoted to health awareness.”
Donations can be made by cash or check and dropped off at Linda Jobe Middle School, Vintage Barber Shop located on Debbie Lane or at www.mobro.co/momav.
Movember originated in Melbourn, Australia in 2003 by 30 men known as the “Mo Bros”. Movember has spread throughout 21 countries and has inspired more than 3 million people globally. At the end of the month, every participant celebrates by shaving their mustache.
“I’m very proud of my colleagues,” Jenkins said. “By joining, they not only show support for a good cause, but they are showing that they support me. I’m truly blessed to work with these people.”
