Teen Leadership and Student Council Sponsor Dena Schimming will move to Summit on Monday, Jan. 27 to pursue her career as an assistant principal. Mrs. Schimming was informed on Friday, Jan. 17 of her new post. Until a permanent teacher can take the place of Mrs. Schimming, a long term substitute will fill in for the remainder of the semester.
Mrs. Schimming says she will carry the best of Legacy over to Summit.
“Everything that I’ve learned, I’ve learned at Legacy High School,” Mrs. Schimming said. “I’ve learned what an amazing campus, amazing morale and school spirit looks like.”
Mrs. Schimming held an emergency Student Council meeting to let student leaders know of the change.
“Though we will all miss Schimming a lot, she has done an amazing job at teaching our council how to succeed on our own,” Student Body President Ashley Meister said. “She has passed down so many amazing leadership qualities that will uphold our council – both this year and years to come.”
In the past six years since Legacy’s opening, Mrs. Schimming played a key part in Legacy’s traditions. Bronco Boot Camp, Be Bronco Bold and other big events began under her leadership.
“Hopefully we can find someone to let the tradition live,” Dr. Shelly Butler said. “I don’t want the students to worry.”
Senior Lucas Loughner served in StuCo with Mrs. Schimming two years.
“I think StuCo will change a lot, but it’s not gonna change the bond StuCo kids have with each other,” Loughner said. “Without a shadow of a doubt, we will always be Legacy, and we will always leave our legacy.”
Student Council members say they are prepared to continue Legacy’s traditions.
“As far as dress up days, pep rallies and other activities – nothing will change,” Meister said. “Schimming has built an amazing legacy here the last few years and those Bronco Nation traditions will live on no matter what.”
Meister is also thankful for Mrs. Schimming’s positive influence.
“Freshman year, I could hardly talk in front of people, and [now] with her help, I’m student body president,” she said. “She has mentored me in leadership, faith and just life in general.”
On Jan. 21 MISD school board approved her promotion in the regular school board meeting along with two other assistant principals at Summit.
Mrs. Schimming recently earned her Masters degree in hopes to someday move into administration.
“I may be going to Summit, but my heart will always be with the Broncos,” Mrs. Schimming said.
