The GO Center, located next to the counselor’s offices, serves as a convenient place to go to for any college information that might be needed. Seth Ahmed, Alfredo Rosado and Anna Duarte are there from 7-9:30 a.m. and from 10:30-3:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, 7 a.m.-1 p.m. on Thursdays, and 7:30-9:30 a.m. and from 10:30-3:30 p.m. on Fridays.
“The GO Center has a lot of useful information that any student can use,” senior Taylor Ferguson said.
The mentors of the dedicated Go Center are prepared to answer any questions and give any information about what to do during and after high school. Their goals for next semester are to be open Monday through Friday and to have more mentors to help.
“The most important thing about college preparation is being up to date and knowing when specific events are going on,” Ahmed said.
Students looking to know what to expect and how to be financially prepared for their education are encouraged to use the GO Center.
“We just want to get the word out more about being here,” Rosado said. “We don’t require appointments either, which is a huge misconception.”
Another mistaken thought about the GO Center is that it’s all about college.
“It isn’t emphasized, but we do tutoring as well,” Ahmed said. “We will help with anything high school or college, and we will bust any college myths that students may be concerned about.”
Along with individual students, the GO Center has helped AVID classes with their college ambitions as well. Based on the 2012 figures for in-state college enrollment, Legacy has the lowest enrollment rate in MISD, which is 57 percent.
“The GO Center bridges the gap for students who are stuck on their college applications or who don’t know what to do,” AVID teacher Mrs. Roberts said. “Since the seniors fill out applications to four year universities and send them in, it helps that they have somewhere to go for help.”
