Key Club will attend the 65th Annual Texas-Oklahoma District Convention (DCON) held at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel April 24-27. The theme for this year’s convention is ‘Get Hooked on Service’, inspired by Peter Pan. DCON provides a unique opportunity for students to meet other Key Club members in the Texas-Oklahoma district and interact with them through a variety of forums, workshops, and activities.
“[DCON] gives a different perspective and it helps the students see how widespread and large Key Club really is and what it’s all about, so it’s special in that way,” Key Club sponsor Ms. Shelly Burkett said. “There’s so many cool things that you can do with the Peter Pan theme, so I’m kind of anxious to see how they pull it off.”
Key Club President and senior Briana Mendoza is the only senior attending DCON. Burkett believes that the high amount of underclassmen and juniors going will be beneficial for the club.
“Last year there were some students that weren’t very active in Key Club and they went to DCON and were blown away by what Key Club is all about,” Burkett said. “What’s exciting is we only have one senior going this year, so everybody that’s going will get that same experience. They’ll be at Legacy next year to help grow the club and do more exciting things.”
To attend DCON, members must be in good standing with the organization and have fulfilled the club’s service requirement of 25 hours per semester. Sophomore Meghan Qualls has anticipated the since the beginning of the school year.
“DCON was a motivator for me because it gave me something to look forward to at the end of the year,” Qualls said. “It also provides me with opportunities to learn more about Key Club and the activities that I can get involved with.”
DCON will host a multitude of competitions over the four days, as well as contests based on clubs’ accomplishments and performance throughout the year. Legacy’s club hopes to improve enough in the next year to make it into the Top 25 Clubs.
“Our service hours are still kind of low for the size club we are, so we definitely won’t be in the Top 25 Clubs,” Burkett said. “But when they see the people that go this year, when they see everything that’s going on, I’m hoping that will be an incentive for us to improve on our point system and possibly reach that goal next year.”
Attending DCON allows members the chance to get new ideas and learn ways to become a better club.
“I’m looking forward to spending time with fellow Key Club members and learning more about Key Club itself,” Qualls said. “I think it will go really well, and I think that we’ll have a lot of fun while we’re there and learn lots of new things to bring back to Legacy.”
