In order to get college credit, students are given the choice to take either TCC or Advance Placement (AP) classes. In the past, students who chose to take AP classes, pass the course and take the AP exam, are automatically exempt from taking the regular final for the class. A recent policy change required students to take a regular final exam along with the AP exam.
“I think it’s unfair they ruled this out in the middle of the year,” junior Sam Berbel said.
Miscommunication lead to the belief that AP students would no longer have exemptions, but according to Academic Associate Principal Erin Frye, everything has been cleared up and the AP students will have their exemptions from their finals.
“I’m glad that they changed it back,” senior Madeline Powell said. “It was just adding extra work on top of what’s already a lot of work required for AP classes.”
Like Powell, the decision to change the policy upset other students. Students took to social media as an outlet to complain by creating a Twitter account to protest the new policy change. The account had over 50 followers before MISD clarified on their decision.
“I created the Twitter so students could have a voice,” senior Jorge Garza said. “I think we accomplished what we set out to do.”
Since MISD clarified the exemption policy, AP students can take the AP exam and receive the exemption to that class.
“I’m glad they put the old policy back in place,” junior Adam Garcia said. “It was unprofessional of MISD to allow a policy change mid-year and adding more to my plate.”
