MISD hosted Apple representatives during a board meeting on December 16 where MISD received a new title. MISD has been named an “Apple Distinguished” school district for it’s Power Up program that started in 2012.
The goal of MISD’s Power Up program to- “ensure educational opportunities for all students delivered through innovative and inspiring teaching methods,” has been implemented through the distribution of 10,000 iPads to MISD high school students and teachers, and MacBooks to teachers.
“True learning takes place through collaboration between students and teachers,” Principal Dr. Shelly Butler said. “The iPads are a device that elevates that collaboration.”
MISD’s use of Apple technology such as iPads, iTunes U, and iBooks caught the eye of Apple’s Education Recognition Program. Who recognizes schools worldwide for innovative learning and teaching, visionary leadership, ongoing professional learning, evidence of success, and a flexible learning environment.
Apple invited MISD to apply for this distinction. MISD’s Educational Technology Trainers Michael Fore and Catherine Mcguinness then created the iBook “Mansfield Independent School District, Power Up!” to serve as the application.
“This is a great way to showcase what MISD is doing with the technology that is made available to students and teachers,” the Technology Trainers said.
Since 2012, MISD has garnered attention from schools around the world. School districts in the US have representatives that observe the program in action. Now that MISD holds the title of an Apple Distinguished school more visits can be expected.
“[This] shows what we do is cutting edge,” Dr. Butler said. “It shows how we are adapting to 21 century needs.”
