On January 29 and 30, the Academic Decathlon team competed in the Regional competition; two very long and tiring days. Various tests were given of the team’s knowledge over all the subjects the team diligently studied since school began. The team left Regionals in high spirits after winning 21 total individual awards and an advancement to state. For senior Erin Long, this will be the second year in a row she has been on the team and made it to state.
“To be honest I wasn’t super surprised [we made state] but I’m really excited about it,” Long said. “It’s super fun so I’m really happy that we made it again.”
In Academic Decathlon (AcaDec) teams compete in 10 different areas- art, music, economics, science, social science, math, language/ literature, essay, interview, and speech. This year’s overarching topic was India, a topic which senior Deja Morehead enjoyed learning about.
“I like studying India’s music, art, and culture,” Morehead said. “[AcaDec] is a great academic environment full of people who are interested in learning.”
To prepare for state, the team plans to hold multiple study sessions. They will also analyze the results from region to try and raise the scores of the lowest scoring events and improve the highest scores earned. With a total of 36,719.2 points earned and a 22nd placement of all the medium schools that advanced to state, Senior Deja Morehead knows her team is capable of doing great things at state.
“It feels great to make it to state to know that all the hard work that my team and I put in really paid off and we will be able to be showcased and compete and represent Legacy at the state competition.” Morehead said. “It’s a privilege, it’s a great honor, and hopefully we will do well.”
