After a long year of virtual competitions, the Academic Decathlon team persevered and won $300 scholarships for each member of the team at the state meet. For senior Patrick Reyna, winning the scholarship means that the team’s hard work paid off.
“Missing out on getting to travel to state this year kinda bummed me out so having some sort of reward for our work was nice,” Reyna said.
Because of COVID-19, all competitions took place virtually on campus. Other than a few glitches during the regional meet, the team dealt with minimal technical difficulties. Senior Camilla Brown enjoyed the uniqueness of the virtual competitions.
“Mr. Davis and Ms. Esaili made the class fun,” Brown said. “This has been a wonderful year. Our teams worked hard and scored well.”
Despite the team’s success, finding students to participate was the biggest challenge this year.
“If we had one more competitor for us this year we likely would have had improved scores this year,” Reyna said, “so hopefully next year we can pull together more competitors.”
