Drawing up the game plan, Volleyball Head Coach Amanda Shingleton prepared for the game that could’ve been her 400th career win.
“What drew me in was the connections, the relationships and the look on a kid’s face when they figure something out,” Coach Shingleton said. “It is like the coolest thing.”
Coach Shingleton is in her 20th season, starting in 2004. She coached two years at Gunn Junior High and then Seguin High School for six years after that.
“It’s all about them [the players], I mean they’re the ones putting in the effort and having to execute things,” Shingleton said.
Katelynn Brothers, 12, thinks Coach Shingleton separates herself from other coaches she has played for.
“She’s always been really supportive, and she wants to win very badly,” Brothers said. “She doesn’t accept losing.”
Brothers believes that while 400 wins as a coach is beyond impressive, more can be done.
“Honestly, if she keeps it up, she’ll definitely hit 500 [wins],” Brothers said.
Coach Shingleton coaches volleyball, but her teachings and what she does can apply outside of just sports.
“I’m trying to instill in them the qualities and characteristics to fight, not just on the court, but in life,” Shingleton said. “When things go wrong, they can continue to fight.”
