Following the tragedies of the California wildfires, Legacy Medical Society and Student Council organized a thrift store to raise donations for those affected. The thrift store will be hosted outside the Student Council room on March 14 with all prices ranging from $1 to $4.
Secretary of Medical Society senior Jose Salomon believes the thrift store will be a good outreach opportunity for those inside and outside of the community.
“In my opinion, there aren’t many medical-related volunteer opportunities in this area, so the thrift store will definitely help us show others the impact of their donations,” Salomon said.
After the thrift store comes to a close, Student Council and Legacy Medical Society will deposit the profits with the bookkeeper to get a check cut that will be sent to those impacted by the wildfires.
“We chose them because we know that as leaders we have to look beyond the walls of our building and help others,” Student Council Advisor Dedric Williams said. “This was a huge tragedy that will have long term effects, and we just hope we can play a small part in someone’s healing process. We didn’t have a lot of donations this year, but I think it is possible for this to be a great tradition. I hope that in the future we can expand and make it bigger, which means more proceeds, and we can be a bigger blessing to someone in the future.”
Salomon hopes that students and staff will see that while money is the direct result of the thrift store, ultimately it’s your time and heart that matter most.
“Obviously, we want to get as much money as possible from the store, but our goal isn’t to show materialistic things,” Salomon said. “Rather, we hope people see that anyone can help and anyone can give back to the community. You don’t have to go out of your way to reach out, simply giving your time is enough.”
