Playing piano since kindergarten, freshman Haley Downs has developed a passion for classical music. Haley has had an instructor for eight of the nine years she’s played piano.
“I think it is better to be able to learn from a teacher,” Downs said. “I don’t always notice my mistakes and the teacher can help me fix them. I can also learn more.”
Haley has been in seven competitions, known as Guilds, to test her improvements over the years.
“I have gone to them mainly because I want to be able to see my progress and how far I’ve gotten,” Downs said.
Haley has advanced from playing “Mary Had A Little Lamb” to work by Beethoven and Bach. She has also composed original pieces, which she plays at the Guilds.
“Playing classical music is fun because it gives me a challenge, like playing the complicated songs,” Downs said.
