He studies his medical vocabulary while getting prepared for the next day’s work in Health Science III. After he finishes his work, junior Ryan Yoder prepares to observe different types of surgeries.
“It’s exciting to be able to get ready for your desired future occupation while still in high school, and I feel lucky to have the opportunity to be in such an honorable class,” Yoder said.
Yoder cleans beds, takes care of patients and participates in physical therapy after patients receive surgery. He learns different techniques for each procedure.
“Its hard work, but I’ll do anything and everything for somebody in need. I always like to help people out in their hard times,” Yoder said.
Although Yoder participates and observes patients and their treatment he values the importance of knowledge and thinks learning about medical treatment and diagnoses is more crucial than observing alone.
“I don’t believe somebody’s life shouldn’t require beforehand knowledge, if you don’t know what to do than you can not take proper care of a patient,” Yoder said.
After taking complete care of a patient, Yoder prepares his routine for the next patient who walks through the door.
“Every patient is unique and therefore needs to be treated differently even if the medical diagnosis is the same. It’s hard considering them patients when you realize they are real people and you start developing sympathy and a caring heart towards them,” Yoder said.
When Health Science ends for the day, Yoder thinks of things he did and realizes he is making a difference.
“I’m glad to help out and participate,” he said. “I want to make this into my own way of life.”
