Band
“I’ve been in band since fifth grade and I play the flute. I play the flute because I cannot sing and it is the instrument that sounds most like a voice. If I could sing, I wish my voice sounded the same as Kelly Clarkson because she has an impressive range. One band moment I will never forget occurred last year when the marching band was in the stands during the area competition. We just got the results that we would go to state. It was nice knowing all our hard work paid off.”

UIL Academics
“I have competed in UIL Academics for going on two years. When I was a sophomore, competing against the upperclassmen was tough because I had not taken physics and calculus yet, but now that I am a junior and taking those classes,  I think I am up to the challenge.”

Favorite movie
“I love the Step Up series because of the dancing and acting. I saw Step Up 3D with my father who recently visited from California a couple of weeks ago. Out of the 3, I think that one is my favorite. My favorite part of the movie is when Moose goes to a competition late, accidentally breaks a pipe and, as a result, his crew dances with water. My favorite character is Moose because he has a true passion for dance and a big heart.”

In ten years…
“I see myself being a resident at Baylor Medical Center and living in Texas. When I was a child I had dreams of being everything from a hockey player to working for NASA but now that I have gotten older, my dream is to be a pediatrician. It is kind of unsettling knowing that I will still be in school ten years from now, but I know all my hard work will be worth it when I have an M.D. next to my name.”

What do you like to do in your spare time?
“I like to read and watch movies. My favorite books series are Percy Jackson and Gallgher because I am interested in mythology and mysteries. I think reading Harry Potter would be cool but that series tends to be too long.  My favorite movie is Inception because it is about dreams.”

Since it is your freshman year and everything is still new, what do you think of high school so far?

“High school is different from what I thought it would be like.  It is hard juggling time between band, homework, and sleep, but I know it will be worth it in the long hall. I like being able to listen to mp3 players, sit wherever I want, and have a variety of foods to choose from at lunch compared to middle school.”

What is your opinion on high school band?

“Although marching band is harder than concert season and practicing is tiring, people in the band are very welcoming and it will all be worth it when we go to state. The first football game last week was cool. It was fun playing stand tunes and dancing to cadances. However, halftime was very challanging because I was nervous, my heart was pounding, and I was not sure which side of the field I should go on. During my first year of high school band I am looking forward to trying out for all state on my flute the most. If I could play any instrument in the band I would play percussion because it looks fun and is something different.

Since you moved from California a couple years ago, how have you adjusted?
“The weather in Texas is really hard to adjust to. California stays around the same temperature all year and Texas has many extremes. I miss the beach, friends, and living five minutes away from Disneyland the most about California. Disneyland had fireworks shows everyday so it was nice watching them for free in my grandma’s backyard. I do not miss bugs and traffic in Cali, however, I hate the huge flying ants on the practice field here even more. What I love the most about Texas is all the nice people.”
