Senior colorguard captain Rachel Romo performs at Bands Of America, a marching band competition held in San Antonio. During the percussion break, after many struggles attempting the third movement correctly, Romo feeds off the team’s energy to accomplish their most energetic show yet.
Romo joined color guard her freshman year. She has participated in seven color guard seasons.
“When they first came out on the field during practice, they looked like they were having more fun,” Romo said. “Their instructor was cool, too.”
When Romo joined colorguard, she didn’t try to aspire to be captain by her senior year.
“I didn’t start off thinking I was going to be awesome that year because I didn’t expect to,” Romo said. “But I was Lieutenant junior year, so I knew what I was doing and it made sense to continue and be captain.”
Romo has performed countless shows for halftime and competitions but believes her sophomore year, when band made state finals, was her best performance.
“It was really exciting to be there as such a young school and go that far,” Romo said. “The instructor told us that since we already made it to top 10, we no longer have to prove ourselves. We could let loose.”
Not only did Romo think the state final was their most entertaining competition, she thought it was their best performance.
“That was when everything just clicked,” Romo said. “Not just for me but for everyone, it was the whole band’s best performance.”
As captain, Romo communicates between the instructor, Renee Cantrell, and colorgaurd.
“I make sure everybody is taped nicely, switch flags when they need to be switched, help people with technique,” Romo said. “I’m kinda like the go-to girl when they need help.”
